WORLD MASTERS ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING QUEBEC CITY, SEPT 7-9

Most member countries were in attendance. The organizing committee did an excellent job of hosting the directors, starting with pick-up at the airport, transport to hotels and the planning of various events and socials.

Sept 8 – 06:15..pick-up at hotels, breakfast at Valcartier military base, inspection of various trails by mountain bike and on foot, inspection of stadium, waxing rooms, warm-up area and all other facilities, then lunch at the base.

Afternoon – tour of armory in downtown old Quebec. This will be the site of all medal presentations. There is also an area allocated for waxing in this large building. The plains of Abraham are next to the Armory and can be used for skiing on off days. Trails will be groomed daily and are within a few minutes walking distance of downtown hotels.

Evening meal was hosted by Valcartier base commander at "the Citadel".

Sept 9 – 08:00 Annual meeting. The organizing committee gave their presentation from 10:00 to 12:00. The meeting resumed at 12:30 and ended at 6:30 PM.

Evening meal was at the Hilton Hotel.

Sept 10 – Departure.

Congratulations…To André and his committee for the wonderful hospitality shown to all directors during the visit to Québec. I have already extended thanks in person and in writing to André on behalf of the Masters, not only for their hospitality, but the highly professional presentation given at the meeting on Sept 9th. In my three years as National Director, this is by far the most impressive presentation I have seen. It covered all aspects of the 2002 MWC, trails, accommodations, transportation, etc.; everything geared toward making this a memorable event for every Master in attendance.

Meeting items..

Dieter Heckmann has agreed to serve another four-year term as president of the WMA, but noted that it would be his last in this capacity.

Maia Tchemenkaia of Russia was elected to the executive as Vice-President. The position became vacant with the untimely death of André Simon this past December.

There are three new directors this year. Artur Forsberg, Sweden; Niklaus Zbiden, Switzerland; and Vitali Kourotchkin, Russia.

MWC 2004.. OC from Lillehammer Norway will be in Mariazell for a bid presentation.

Future MWC’s

2001 Mariazell, Austria

2002 Québec, Canada

2003 Hirschau/Seefeld, Germany/Austria

MWC for Russia.. For the past few years, the WMA has been promoting races in Russia, and rightfully so. Many former Eastern Bloc countries regularly participate in our MWC’s and Russia continually sends more than one hundred masters each year.

It is extremely difficult for North Americans to attend just another race in Russia, but I feel many would go if a MWC were held there. Masters who have skied there have nothing but praise for the organization and hospitality shown, not to mention the very low cost of accommodations. **note item on Novouralsk.

Dieter Heckmann along with some European Directors and Masters will be travelling to Russia to compete this season; and if all goes well, next year we will vote on awarding a MWC to this country

MWC 2001 Mariazell Austria Feb 15-24

At our annual meeting Dieter Heckmann notified Directors that he had visited the race site in Mariazell and could report that all work had been completed, trails have been re-done and widened, and everything is on schedule for February.

As I noted in the spring newsletter, this MWC is in Central Europe and will be well attended, so for those of you planning to go, make reservations as soon as possible. This is a small area but it can accommodate all participants. If bookings are made late however, you may not get exactly what you are looking for! You will note on the accommodation information form that all bookings must be made through the organizing committee.

Entry forms

A reminder that these are to be completed in triplicate. The entrant retains a copy and the other two copies are sent to the National Director with payment. If at some time in future you should decide to make a change regarding your choice of races, notify your National Director as soon as possible. Last minute changes will not be possible! I look forward to another good Canadian turnout at Mariazell.
