CANADIAN MASTERS' CROSS COUNTRY SKI ASSOCIATION MARCH 1999 NEWSLETTER |
|
A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR HI MASTERS - Jack White(National Director) Where to start? I'm still suffering from the infamous jet-lag, (yes Virginia, there is such a thing). On the desk in front of me are stacks of backlog mail, e-mail, Masters World Cup and National results, not to mention a few of those dreaded recycle paper 6x9 envelopes stating "this envelop contains your tax package". Does everyone eagerly open these with great anticipation? Or like me put them away for a later date, back to the task at hand, oh wandering mind. Another ski season has passed, and for many areas across the country it was a frustrating one. Southern Ontario not getting enough snow to ski until well into the new year. Northern New Brunswick had good conditions most of the season. PEI and NS had next to nothing. In NF we usually got five days of flurries and a day or two of rain, but managed to ski from late November to March. The Quebec City region and Western Canada had pretty good conditions. Silver Star in BC had excellent snow, and lots of it. This was evident at our Nationals at Sovereign Lakes nearby, nothing but new powder snow and perfect temperatures each day. However this is spring we must all remain positive and predict that next winter will bring our best ski conditions in years. In that light maybe we will manage to train and stay fit during the summer months, in anticipation of attaining ou best personal results. Whatever our summer sports may be, and no matter how hard we want to work at them, always remember the FUN FACTOR. IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING FUN, FORGET IT THE TRIALS AND TRAVELS OF A NATIONAL DIRECTOR - see Jack fly REPORT ON MWC, GRINDELWALD |

THOUGHTS FOR SUMMER AND FALL TRAINING - by Marty Hall |
| RACE SUITS - A design was selected at the AGM but is going to need some more work. Will keep you posted | |
| ALENA'S ANNUAL FLU - For the past several years our former National Director Alena Branda, has had the misfortune of contracting a flu bug at either our National's, WMC's or both. This year she went to Grindelwald in top condition, with Laddy's coaching and excellent waxing, she would have won more gold medals for Canada. However many lonely hours/days were spent in her room (with a large jug of liquid, non alcholic) unable to compete in a single race. Alena, I'm predicting that this will be your flu free and best season ever. jack | MASTER ERIC - The famous BC Cariboo Marathon 1999 was won by Masters skier Eric Pascas from Williams Lake. Eric entered the Cariboo several years ago just to try it. This year he skied the 50K course in 2:54, just a few seconds faster than two time winner Joe Buchar. Joe is an excellent BC racer who places first or second in most BC Loppets. The poit is, at 42 years of age, Eric is now the oldest Cariboo Marathon winner, Joe Buchar is 28 and looking forward to joining the Canadian Masters. Eric Pascas is a most modest racer and always an incredible friend. On behalf of all Canadian Masters, I would like to congratulate Eric on the great achievement of this season. Alena Branda |
MEMBERSHIPS There has been a slight decline in memberships from last season. This decline usually occurs the year after the MWC is held in N Amereica. However, both National and Provincial budgets remain stable. At our AGM in Vernon a new system regarding memberships was adopted. There will no longer be a family membership, each member will pay the same $15.00 fee. Check out the Benifits of Membership and renew now |
SKI DRAW - This years lucky winner of a pair of Fisher
RSC skis is Serge Mathieu of Magog, Quebec. A total of 102 members took advantage of this
years draw, rasing $510 in support of the CCC National Junior Program. At the AGM the
members decided to increase the donation to an even $1000. We will have the same draw next year, soo show your support for Canada's young skiers and good luck. |
